The classic chocolate chip cookie debate! I think chocolate chip cookies should be chewy with a gooey center; however, if you ask my husband, he believes they should be crispy and crunchy! Luckily, this is just a matter of time in the oven so everyone can be happy. As the Rhoad’s resident baker, another aspect of a perfect chocolate chip cookie is that it uses melted butter instead of softened. I don’t know about you, but planning to soften butter never works for me. Yes, I know there’s a hack for that, but why not just use melted butter?

Alright, let’s get into it!
Must-Have Tools for Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate chip cookies are an excellent entry point for baking if you have a great recipe. One reason they are perfect for beginners is because they require minimal equipment. All you need to bake cookies is a cookie sheet, two medium-sized bowls (you could even use your cooking pots if you don’t have mixing bowls!), and a spatula. Now, there are a few items that can make your baking process easier:

The Essential Ingredients
Next, we must prepare the ingredients. First, in a small microwave-safe dish, melt your butter for 15 seconds at a time in the microwave until fully melted. Once complete, set aside while preparing your dry ingredients. In the first bowl, combine your dry ingredients, starting with flour, baking soda, and salt. In a second bowl, combine your melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated white sugar and whisk until thoroughly combined. Then, add your whole egg, egg yolk, and vanilla. After which, pour your wet ingredients into the dry, gently combine with your spatula or Danish dough whisk, and avoid over-mixing. Finally, add in your chocolate chips and or other mix-ins.

Flour
Baking Soda
Salt
Butter
1 Egg
1 Egg Yolk
Vanilla
Chocolate Chips
Walnuts (Optional)
Lets Talk Mix-Ins and Toppings
Want to take your cookies beyond classic chocolate chips? Try mixing in some extras! Popular options include walnuts, pecans, almonds, peanut butter chips, white chocolate chips, or dried fruits like cranberries or cherries.
To add mix-ins, aim for a total weight of 245 grams. For example, if you’re adding chocolate chips, walnuts, and dried cherries, you might use the following:
100 grams Chocolate Chips + 100 grams Walnuts + 45 grams Dried Cherries = 245 grams total.
Using a kitchen scale helps ensure accurate measurements, giving you perfectly consistent cookies every time. I highly recommend getting one if you plan to bake regularly!
Chill Time
Since these cookies utilize melted butter we do need to chill them for a minimum of 2 hours; however, I have also been successful chilling them in the freezer for 30 minutes!
Crunchy or Chewy Cookies
Now, back to our household debate: chewy vs. crispy cookies! After some trial and error, here’s what I’ve found works best:
For a perfect chewy cookie: Use 2 tablespoons of dough for each cookie, spaced about 1 ½ inches apart. Bake at 350°F for 12 minutes.
For crunchy, crispy cookies (my husband’s favorite): Use 1 tablespoon of dough for each cookie and bake for 14 minutes at 350°F.
The best part? You can easily divide your cookie dough into two batches and make both styles in one go!
